It’s time to stock up on good table wine as we move into the Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year holiday entertaining season. As I’ve written before, Costco continues to offer a wide range of California wines, several of which are great values for everyday sipping. Kirkland Signature 2013 Sonoma County Old Vine Zinfandel is an affordable holiday wine (about $10 depending on the specific store where you buy it).
As the name says, the wine is produced from low yield vines that average 45 years old. That is a little on the young side of old for Zinfandel vines, but still produces a rich bouquet and a full-bodied wine. You should pick up blackberry, cassis and chocolate on the palette. Vanilla and spice round out the flavors, with tannins softened by an undisclosed period of maturation in oak. Alcohol content is moderate at 15.3%. Recommend giving the wine at least an hour in a good decanter to open up.
Happy holidays! I hope you’ll try the 2013 Sonoma County Old Vine Zinfandel from Costco and share your comments below.
