Gainey Vineyard is a family operated winery that produces some of the best estate bottled wines in Santa Barbara County. In September I had the good fortune to visit the Santa Ynez Valley and spend a few hours on Wine Adventures, beginning at Gainey Vineyard.
Enter through the retail area and you’ll be matched up with a tasting host. Tasting takes place in an adjacent former barrel room that now contains historical displays with photos of the original Gainey farm, which started in 1962. The standard $15 tasting flight of 6 wines includes Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon (most of Gainey’s varietals).
All wines in the tasting flight were good, though the 2012 Gainey Vineyard Limited Selection Cabernet Sauvignon (follow link for winemaker’s notes) was my runaway favorite. Rich with dark berries, vanilla and a hint of oak – aged 22 months in 41% new French Oak. Although very drinkable now, it will improve with a couple more years in the bottle. A steal at $45.
The winery is easy to find on Highway 246, near the Santa Ynez airport. Tasting room is room is open daily for walk-ins or appointments, though appointments are only required for groups of 8 or more. Barrel tastings are offered at the top of the hour from 11:00am to 3:00pm on weekdays.
I recommend a stop at Gainey Vineyard on your next Wine Adventure in Santa Barbara County’s Santa Ynez Valley.
