Why go: Great food, attentive service, excellent wine list.
Rêve Bistro is tucked away in the corner of a tree shaded strip mall just off Mt. Diablo Boulebard, the main drag in Lafayette, California (about a half hour east of San Francisco and half our south of Napa). There isn’t much parking available in the early evening and the signage doesn’t grab your attention while driving past on Moraga Boulevard, but getting to Rêve is worth the adventure.
Make your way through the nondescript entrance and you’ll immediately see outdoor seating and a door to the small bar and main dining room. Their is a warm and cozy feel to Rêve, like a casual neighborhood café with friendly service and affordable food prepared and served with Parisian style. The seasonal menu is extensive, but fits on one page and is loaded with classic French bistro items – Escargot appetizer, Soupe A L’Oignon Gratenee (French Onion Soup), Noix De St. Jacques (Scallops) and Steak Frites (New York steak). All items are locally-sourced, fresh and prepared to perfection. Save room for dessert.
If you’re familiar with moderately priced California wines, you may recognize producers on the wine list from Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Lake County, Paso Robles and Monterey. The real gems are well-chosen representatives of France’s Alsace, Loire Valley, Rhône, Burgundy and Bordeaux. You’ll find longer wine lists, but few that are as well chosen as at Rêve. To make exploring French wines more affordable, stop in Tuesdays and Wednesdays when most wines on the list are discounted 50%.
As the sign in the front window says, Rêve Bistro is “A Little Paris In The Hood.” Bon voyage!
Reservations recommended – seats fill quickly after opening. Book on OpenTable.
