My Berryessa Gap Vineyards tasting room adventure started like so many do – a few free minutes and a tasting room nearby. The town of Winters (map below) is in Northern California’s Yolo County nut tree country, roughly midway between Napa and Sacramento at the eastern base of the Vaca Mountains. After a stop at Cache Creek Casino a half hour north, we were waiting for dinner across the street in downtown Winters and stopped by the tasting room to see what they had to offer. Yolo County is experiencing rapid growth in vineyard planting and some very good wines are being produced in the area.

Berryessa Gap Vineyards sources wine grapes from its own Coble Ranch vineyards. Sturdy rootstock developed by the owners produces a wine range of wines (click here to see all their current releases). The tasting room offers a great deal – $5 for a tasting of five wines. There are fourteen wines on the tasting menu to choose from, though a couple were sold out and not available during my visit.

I tasted two white wines – 2015 Sauvignon Blanc ($23) and 2015 Chardonnay ($23). I liked both and consider them good warm weather sipping wines. Two nice reds stood out – the 2013 Zinfandel Reserve ($40) and 2013 Coble Ranch ($32), a propriety blend of Malbec and Zinfandel.

While in Winters, stop by Buckhorn Steakhouse for a family style meal and a great bar (try the chocolate martini after dinner – tastes like a Milky Way candy bar with a kick) or Putah Creek Cafe & Bakery for lighter fare and excellent sweets. I’ve dined at both and have never been disappointed. Both are located on the same corner as the Berryessa Gap tasting room.
