Deerfield Ranch Winery provides a fun and unique tasting experience in the comfort of their working wine cave. Located in the community of Kenwood on Highway 12 in the Valley of the Moon, Deerfield Ranch is easy to find in central Sonoma County. There are many tasting rooms and restaurants along this stretch of Sonoma Highway, but all you’ll see from the road is Deefield Ranch’s sign and about seven acres of Syrah planted against a backdrop of pine trees and native oaks in the hills beyond the entrance.
Follow the driveway to either the upper parking lot next to the production building or bear right into the lower lot surrounded by Syrah vines. There are about 7 acres planted on the property, Deerfield Ranch purchases the bulk of its fruit from nearby growers.
As shown in the photos below, the tasting room is located near the geographic center of a working wine cave, surrounded by barrels on all sides. Want to purchase a barrel of wine? Deerfield Ranch offers private label bottling of barrels and half barrels. Use your custom label (pending government approval) for private sipping or corporate giving (click here for more info).
The tasting room is very comfortable, with plush couches and tables that can handle almost any size group. Beware of the acoustics – you’ll be hearing conversations from across the cave and others will be hearing yours! Staff are friendly, efficient and very knowledgeable about Deerfield wines and Sonoma wine country in general.
On my visit, a tasting flight of 5 wines cost $20, with purchases credited to tasting fees. Prices are moderate, ranging from about $30 for sparkling rosé, $50 to $90 for most recent vintage red wines, and $150 for premium library wines. The 2016 Naked Ladies Sparkling Rosé ($29) was especially refreshing and the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma Mountain ($85) was excellent. Their complete offering of wines covers an extensive selection of common varietals and blends.
You’ll probably like several of their wines, so put Deerfield Ranch Winery on your list of Wine Adventures next time you’re tasting in Sonoma County. A unique cave tasting experience, good wine and a lot of fun.
