It’s National Bourbon Day! Bourbon that meets today’s official standards began production in Bourbon County, Kentucky (established 1785) where starting in the 1850’s settlers began distilling a corn-based whiskey and aged their particular style of whiskey in oak barrels. During Prohibition, Bourbon production halted in Bourbon County, but re-started in other parts of Kentucky upon the ban being lifted. Whiskey production did not re-start in Bourbon County itself for another 90 years.

In 1964 the U.S. Congress designated Bourbon as a Distinctive Product of the United States based on the specific production requirements established by the industry.

#NationalBourbonDay is celebrated annually on June 14th.
