It’s National Croissant Day – a day to celebrate the tasty pastry that originated in Austria and made its way to France when Marie Antionette, the Archduchess of Austria, married French King Louis XVI in 1770. Although Louis and Marie were later executed during the French Revolution, the croissant lives on and has since been recognized as a French staple.

The croissant consists of flaky, yeast-raised dough rolled together in layers. Its crescent shape is said to have been created by Austrian bakers when Ottoman conquerors ruled the country and resembles the crescent found in the Turkish flag.

Celebrated annually on January 30th.
