It’s National French Toast Day, so break out your favorite ingrediants and fire up the stove top! The term “french toast” has nothing to do with France or the French, it is believed to come from an Old Irish (aka Old Gaelic) phrase that translates “to slice” as “to French.” But french toast recipes go back a few thousand years earlier, when Romans dipped bread into milk or eggs before frying. In much of Europe, french toast became a popular method for using up stale bread instead of throwing it out.
In America, french toast became a common item found on restaurant breakfast menus in the mid 1800’s.
National French Toast Day is celebrated in the US annually on November 28th.
