National Irish Coffee Day is one of those rare days that commemorates a drink actually invented in the country that is part of its name! First served at a restaurant in Ireland’s Shannon Airport on a cold day in 1942, the original recipe consisted of black coffee with a shot of Irish Whiskey topped with whipped cream. Irish Coffee was brought to America in 1952 by a travel writer who tasted it at Shannon Airport and shared the original recipe with proprietors of the Buena Vista Cafe on the corner of Beach and Hyde Streets in San Francisco. After trying out several variations, they eventually settled on the recipe still served at the Buena Vista today.

National Irish Coffee Day is celebrated each year on January 25th.
