The Widow Clicquot by Tilar Mazzeo tells the story of wine legend Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin (1777-1866), the “Grande Dame of Champagne.” Married at age 21 to businessman François Clicquot, she became “Veuve Clicquot” (Widow Clicquot) when her husband passed away six years later. She was left with a daughter to raise and several businesses, which included banking, dry goods trading, and Champagne production. She focused her efforts on the wine business and under her leadership produced significant success for her family and the industry. Among wine making innovations developed by her team is the process of riddling, which is still widely used today.

The story of Veuve Clicquot is filled with interesting history, including significant political and social events of her time and development of the wine industry and Clicquot brand. An excellent read wine lovers are sure to enjoy.
