VJB Cellars is easy to find on the corner of Highway 12 and Shaw Avenue in the Sonoma County community of Kenwood, about 15 minutes north of downtown Sonoma (see map below). Vineyards and wine production are a few minutes down the road, but the warm and friendly tasting room is a multi-faceted destination to enjoy. Not only is there fine wine to sip, there is great food and more awaiting visitors in a traditional Italian setting.
Enter the main courtyard through the large wooden gates facing Shaw Avenue and you’re welcomed into the world of VJB Cellars. There’s plenty of comfortable seating outdoors where excellent service delivers pizzas, ribs, panini and daily specials to your umbrella-shaded table. Turn left at the entrance and enter La Cucina, with its deli counter featuring fresh meats, cheeses and salads and shelves filled with Italian specialties of every kind. Continue past the deli counter and you’ll come to the tasting room. That was my destination during a recent visit.
VJB Cellars gives concessions to their Sonoma County location, but their range of wines is heavily influenced by the founder’s Italian heritage. Grapes in most VJB wines trace their origin to Italian wine regions that include Puglia, Friuli, Piedmonte, Umbria, Sicily, Abruzzo, Compania and Tuscany. Throw in a few from Burgundy and Bordeaux and VJB presents current releases of Chardonnay, Rosé and light-to-full bodied reds at prices from about $26 to $62. I found all of the wines excellent, with a hat tip to the 2015 Primitivo, a medium bodied red with hints of cherry, fig and vanilla perfect for daily summer sipping.
There is also a Gelato & Chocolate shop off the courtyard, stop in for some delicious sweets.
VJB Vineyards & Cellars is a great place to stop in for wine tasting, lunch or snacks during a Sonoma County Wine Country adventure. Hours for the tasting room and all the shops are 10am to 4pm daily.
