Our Wine Of The Week is another great summer sip – 2017 Ruffino Il Ducale Pinot Grigio, produced from grapes grown in the Friuli area northeast of Venice, Italy.
Ruffino is well-known in the U.S., especially their affordable Chianti and red wines found in most wine shops, grocery stores, warehouse stores and beverage superstores. The winery and tasting room are located a short distance southeast of Florence in the Chianti region, though their grapes, such as Pinot Grigio, are sourced from the best growing areas for each varietal.
Ruffino’s “Il Ducole” (the Duke’s) is a hearty version of Pinot Grigio that is fine to sip well-chilled but is at it’s best paired with hearty summer appetizers and meals. Golden straw in color and emitting the floral notes common in Italian whites, the wine provides bold flavors of white stone fruits, apple and pear with firm minerality. Fermented and aged in steel tanks, alcohol 12.5%.
Look for 2017 Ruffino Il Ducale Pinot Grigio anywhere that sells Italian wines. Sells for about $20 retail.
Cheers!
